3 Quick Steps
Stop the Damage Now
If water is flowing right now, do these three things first.
1. Turn off the main water valve.
It is usually near your water meter or where the pipe enters your house. Turn it clockwise until it stops. This is the most important step.
2. Move belongings away from the water.
Lift rugs. Move electronics, books, and furniture. Use buckets and towels to stop water from spreading.
3. Open all the cold taps in the house.
This drains the pipes faster and reduces the pressure. Less pressure means less leaking while we travel to you.
4. Call or WhatsApp us.
We will tell you what else to do while we are on our way.
Signs You Have a Burst Pipe
Most burst pipes are easy to spot. Some are hidden in walls, ceilings, or underground. Here is how to know.
You Can See It
- Water pouring from a pipe
- Wet patch on a wall, ceiling, or floor
- Puddle outside that won’t dry
- Water bubbling up through paving or grass
The Hidden Signs
Your water bill suddenly doubled or tripled.
Burst pipe flooding a room, yard, or ceiling
Your water pressure dropped overnight.
A burst inside a wall or underground steals water from your taps. Pressure drops, but not all the way.
You hear hissing, dripping, or running water and no tap is open.
Put your ear against the wall. If you hear water, there is a leak inside.
A wall or ceiling has a damp patch that keeps getting bigger.
The leak is feeding it from behind. The wet patch will spread, then bubble, then collapse.
A musty, damp smell in one room.
Hidden leaks grow mould fast. The smell often comes before the visible damage.
A green patch in your yard or driveway.
Grass over a leaking pipe grows faster and greener. Wet ground under paving sinks slightly.
A warm spot on the floor.
This means a hot water pipe is leaking under the slab. Stand barefoot in different rooms; if one spot is warmer, there is a leak.
Burst Pipe Problems We Fix in Harare
Every burst is different. Here are the most common types we handle.
Burst Pipe Inside a Wall
Water comes through plaster or wallpaper. We use acoustic and thermal tools to find the exact spot, then cut a small access hole, fix the pipe, and pressure test. No “knock the whole wall down” approach.
Burst Pipe Under the Floor or Slab
Slab leaks are common in older Harare homes (Avondale, Mount Pleasant, Highlands). The pipe runs under concrete. We locate the leak, lift the smallest tile or section needed, repair, and reseal.
Burst Pipe Under the Yard or Driveway
Often caused by tree roots (jacaranda and msasa are the worst), shifting ground, or old galvanised pipes. We locate the leak, dig only where needed, replace the damaged section, and refill.
Burst Pipe in the Ceiling
Usually from the geyser overflow line, the cold feed to the geyser, or a hot water line in the roof. We drain the ceiling, find the leak, repair it, and check the rest of the line for weak spots.
Burst Pipe Between Meter and House
The boundary pipe from the meter to your house is your responsibility, not the council’s. We trace, expose, and replace as needed.
Outside Tap or Garden Pipe Burst
Easier to spot, usually cheaper to fix. We replace the burst section and check for other weak points caused by the same pressure spike.
Repeated Small Leaks in Different Spots
This usually means your whole pipe system is failing, common in homes 40+ years old with original galvanised steel. We do a system inspection and quote a section or whole-house repipe.
Why Pipes Burst in Harare
Pipes burst here for reasons that don’t apply in other cities. Here is what we see most.
Old Galvanised Steel Pipes
Many Harare homes built before 1985 still have original galvanised steel pipes. After 40+ years, the inside rusts, narrows, and weakens. One day it splits. If your house is from the 60s, 70s, or 80s and you haven’t repiped, this is your most likely cause. Common in: Avondale, Highlands, Mount Pleasant, Greendale, Newlands, Belvedere, parts of Borrowdale.
Ground Movement (Black Cotton Soil)
A lot of Harare sits on black cotton soil. It swells when wet and shrinks when dry. This pulls pipes apart at the joints. We see this most in late winter and early summer.
Council Pressure Surges
ZINWA and Harare City pressure goes from zero to high quickly when water comes back after a cut. The sudden surge pops weak joints and old pipes.
Borehole Pressure Issues
If your borehole pump has no pressure switch or the switch is faulty, pressure can spike high and damage pipes. We see this often in suburbs heavily reliant on boreholes.
Tree Roots
Jacaranda, msasa, and gum tree roots seek out water lines and crush them. Old clay or concrete pipes are the worst affected. PVC and HDPE are stronger but not immune.
Cold Snaps and Temperature Swings
Harare’s June and July nights can be 5°C and the days 25°C. That swing stresses metal pipes and rigid fittings. Cracks form, then burst.
Cheap Fittings From Past Repairs
Some leaks are from past plumbing work using low-grade fittings. We see this often. Quality fittings cost slightly more upfront and last decades longer.
How We Find Hidden Leaks
We don’t guess. We don’t knock down walls until we know exactly where the leak is. Here are the tools we use.
Acoustic Leak Detection
We use sensitive listening equipment to hear the sound of water escaping from a pipe even through walls, floors, and concrete. Water under pressure makes a specific sound. Our equipment picks it up.
Thermal Imaging
For hot water leaks, we use a thermal camera. The leak shows up as a warm patch on the wall, ceiling, or floor. We pinpoint it without lifting a tile.
Pressure Testing
We close off sections of your plumbing and pressure-test each one. The section that loses pressure has the leak. This narrows the search to a small area before we open anything.
Water Meter Test
The simplest first step. We close every tap, then watch your water meter. If it still moves, you leak. We then isolate which line.
Tracer Dye
For suspected slab or boundary leaks, we add a safe dye to the water. It reveals where the leak surfaces. Useful for outdoor and underground bursts.
Drain Camera (Where Needed)
For burst drain pipes (not water supply), we use a CCTV drain camera to find the break, crack, or root intrusion.

Burst Pipe Repair FAQ
How fast can you get to a burst pipe?
For most Harare suburbs, 30 to 60 minutes during the day. After hours, allow up to 90 minutes for further-out areas. For active flooding, we treat it as an emergency.
Can you find a leak without breaking my walls?
Yes, in most cases. We use acoustic and thermal tools to pinpoint the leak first. We only open the smallest area needed for the actual repair.
What pipe will you use to replace mine?
For above-ground and indoor work, we use PEX or copper. For underground, we use HDPE (the best for tree-root areas) or heavy-duty PVC. We do not use cheap fittings.
Should I repipe my whole house or just fix the leak?
If you have one burst and the rest of the pipework is sound, just fix the leak. If you have repeated leaks in different spots, your pipes are failing, and a section or whole-house repipe is cheaper long-term. We give you an honest assessment.
Do you work on borehole and JoJo tank pipes?
Yes. Burst pipes between borehole, tank, and house are some of our most common Harare jobs. We use HDPE for outdoor runs and PEX or copper indoors.
Will you damage my paving, tiles, or driveway?
We open the smallest area needed. For tiles, we keep spares from the same batch (you should keep some too — ask us). For paving and driveways, we reinstate as close as possible. Some marking is unavoidable, but we minimise it.
Stop the Damage. Get It Fixed Today.
A burst pipe gets worse every minute. Hidden leaks waste water and damage your home behind the walls. Either way, the earlier we look, the less it costs you.
